Matchstick Quilting Quilt Block – Kelly Nagel
This matchstick quilt block is named as such because of the matchstick quilting it features, which really calls attention to the brightly colored thread used on a neutral background. Matchstick quilting is basically straight line quilting but a bit wonky. The stitching lines are placed about a matchstick-length apart, and just like a burned matchstick, the lines aren’t perfectly straight. For this quilt block, we’ll take matchstick quilting one step beyond and use the negative space in the quilting to spell out a name. This process is easy with Sulky Stick ‘n Stitch. Stick ‘n Stitch is a water soluble sticky back stabilizer that is a great tool for straight…

Make A St. Patricks Day Coaster
Make a St. Patrick’s Day Coaster or Mug Rug for your Shamrock Shake or Green Tea and cozy up to some wool felt applique! I have a soft spot for the minor holidays like Valentine’s Day, Arbor Day, Pi Day and of course, St. Patrick’s Day. Maybe it’s because it’s March and I love green and the promise of spring. Maybe because I could eat corned beef and sauerkraut every day. Or maybe it’s just a great excuse to have a party and stitch something new. My other addiction is coffee. So I decided to design a St. Patrick’s Day coaster or Mug Rug that celebrated both. Instead of…

How to Create a Modern Quilt Design
Modern Art Quilts Blog Tour – Two Color Triangles & How to Create a Modern Quilt Design This particular book and blog tour, Modern Art Quilts, came at the perfect time because I’ve been doing a lot more research on what truly makes a quilt “modern” and how to create an original modern quilt design. I particularly love the 3 technique exercises from the book and two of those exercises helped me create a modern quilt design, translated into a little triangle quilt. I began by pulling fabrics in my two favorite color families: red and turquoise. I adore these colors together in all their shades and values. Then I…

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. + Free Design
MLK Day: Because Hate is Too Great a Burden to Bear Today is a day to reflect and remember with a free embroidery design including a quote from the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. One of the many benefits of growing up in North Georgia is the ability to experience history, instead of just reading about it. As I think about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, I am able to not just remember his sermons, inspiring quotes and speeches, but I can add my own experiences at the King Center and at Dr. King’s gravesite. I can remember seeing his childhood home and having lunch at the restaurant…
