Sulky Certified Instructor Rita Gamela recently sent me a picture of this great little clutch she made for an event. She told me that she didn’t have a ton of time on her hands, but she really wanted a new clutch purse for the upcoming event. So she went into her stash and found a place mat! That place mat turned into a great accessory.
She inserted a zipper using the buttonhole stitch and a brand new purse is born! What a great way to upcycle a place mat.
Sewing has been a lifelong passion for Rita Gamela. She started sewing at the age of 5 with her toy sewing machine purchased by her parents. Her love of sewing developed as she watched her family members tailor suits, design dresses, make lace and other items. It came as no surprise to those who knew her that by the age of 7 Rita was making her own clothes. She pursued her craft by completing the City and Guilds I and II in Fashion and Design at Hampton College in the United Kingdom. She continues to sharpen her skills with continuing education. She has attended and earned teaching credentials for the following: Martha Pullen Heirloom Sewing Educator, Jenny Haskins Accredited Teacher and Quilter, and Sulky Teacher Certification Training. Rita teaches sewing, tailoring, and quilting at local sewing shops and other events. Rita has received several commendations and awards for her work. Her greatest joy is sewing and sharing it with others. She and her husband Bill currently live in Upstate NY.
Thanks for sharing with us Rita! Happy sewing!
