Pink Ribbon Pincushion

Mason Jar Sewing Kit

Create a pink ribbon pincushion on a Mason jar lid, and store a sewing project kit inside the jar to gift to a breast cancer patient, care giver or survivor. This gift gives the patient something to do on treatment day, complete with a printed handwork pattern to work on and keep hands busy.

SUPPLIES

• Hand Embroidery Design
• Sulky Stick ‘n Stitch™ (for printing pattern)
• Coordinating 12 wt. Cotton Petites™ Thread (for constructing pincushion)
• Poly Star™ Pastel Pink Thread 6-pack (to place inside jar)
• Hand sewing needles (for construction & to place inside jar)
• Pink Ribbon pins (to place in pincushion)
• Small handful of fiberfill
• Curved Tip Squeezers (to place inside jar)
• Pinking shears (featured: Havel’s Sewing pinking shears)
• Quilt clips (such as Clover Wonder Clips)
• Mason jar
• 8 1/2″ square of solid pink fabric (for pattern)
• 5″ square of pink-ribbon themed fabric (for pincushion; approximate size depends on mason jar lid circumference)
• Circle of pink felt (size depends on Mason jar lid circumference)
• Craft glue

PREPARE SEWING KIT

Print a handwork pattern onto a sheet of Stick ‘n Stitch. Be sure to print on the fabric-like side and set the printer for the “draft” setting. The featured pattern is Heart o’ Flowers by Mary Corbet, available for free.

Trim the solid fabric using pinking shears to reduce fraying.

Cut out the printed pattern, leaving at least a 1″ margin beyond the design perimeter.

Remove the paper backing from the pattern and center it on the solid fabric.

Insert a handwork needle into the fabric just beyond the pattern. Roll the fabric and insert it into the Mason jar.

Add the 6 spools of Poly Star thread to the Mason jar. Place the Curved Tip Squeezers into the jar, too.

PINK RIBBON PINCUSHION

Take apart the Mason jar lid and use the inner lid as a template to cut a circle from the felt.

Place the inner jar lid on the print fabric square. Trim the square using pinking shears, making sure to have at least 1 1/2″ of fabric extending beyond the lid perimeter.

Thread a handwork needle with a strand of Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Thread. Sew a gathering stitch along the fabric perimeter.

Place a handful of fiberfill inside the fabric “pouch” created by slightly gathering the thread. Place the Mason jar lid against the fiberfill, and pull the thread taut around the lid. Take a few stitches through the gathers to secure the thread; knot the thread ends.

Glue the felt circle to the lid, covering the fabric raw edges. Use quilt clips to secure the felt until dry. Let the glue dry thoroughly.

FINISHING THE PINK RIBBON PINCUSHION

Insert the pincushion into the outer Mason jar lid.

Screw the lid onto the jar.

Place a few Pink Ribbon Pins into the pincushion.

Gift the jar to a friend undergoing treatment, a caregiver or survivor.
