Stars and Stripes – a Patriotic Quilt Pattern

PATTERN DETAILS

The featured Stars and Stripes quilt pattern measures 52″ square. This is a large throw size and looks great displayed on a couch, to cozy up with on chilly evenings. The quilt is comprised of Friendship Star and Star blocks, which both have center fabric squares that are easily embellished with decorative stitching, hand or machine embroidery.

After reading through the pattern, it’s easy to change the finished size and look by alternating the block placements or simply making less blocks. Stitch two Friendship Star Blocks and one Star Block, and piece them together with borders and cornerstones to create a nice table runner. Stitch one block and fuse it to the back of a jacket. QUILTING IDEAS

The featured quilt is quilted using Sulky 50 wt. Cotton Thread in various colors to match the American Beauty fabrics. For more detailing, a thicker thread is also used (Sulky 30 wt. Blendables in “America”), so it pops off the surface and provides an extra texture to the quilt.

The quilt also requires a neutral background and backing fabric, plus binding. If choosing a white fabric, such as for the featured sample, consider fusing Sulky Tender Touch to the back of the blocks after piecing to minimize show-through and add thread count for ease in quilting.
