ABOUT THE THREAD ASSORTMENT
The Build a Christmas Bookshelf 40 Wt. Rayon Thread Collection contains 12 King Spools – enough to create nine quilt blocks to create a quilt, table topper, placemat set or pillow scene. Urban Threads teamed up with Sulky to select 12 beautiful thread colors specifically for the Urban Threads Build a Christmas Bookshelf Scene. This complete collection includes all the thread colors you need to stitch the project, so you can skip the guesswork of choosing and buying thread.

FABRIC, STABILIZER & NEEDLE PAIRINGS
For Sulky Rayon Thread, we recommend using a size 90/14 Embroidery Needle if working with quilting cotton fabric or Sulky Felty. If working with cork fabric, faux leather or vinyl/coasted fabrics, use a size 80/12 Microtex Needle.
These designs appear to be comprised of satin fill stitches; however, most of the stitches are are actually sketchy, overlapping straight stitches. This gives each block incredible detail and depth with shading. As a result of the stitches chosen, you can use a variety of fabrics with success.

If you’re unsure which stabilizer to use for the fabric you’ve chosen, consult out Stabilizer Selection Tool. (You’ll want to bookmark that page!)

As a general rule for these types of designs, pair the following:
- Quilting Cotton Fabric with Sulky Soft ‘n Sheer Stabilizer. This stabilizer is a cut-away, permanent stabilizer that stays with the fabric forever, providing continual support through use and washings. CHoose a black Soft ‘n Sheer stabilizer if working with a dark fabric. If working with a very lightweight quilting cotton fabric, you may prefer a fusible cut-away stabilizer; choose Soft ‘n Sheer Extra. When the embroidery is complete, trim the block with the stabilizer so it remains to fully support the entire fabric piece.
- Sulky Felty with Sulky Totally Stable Stabilizer. This stabilizer is unique in that it is temporarily fusible and tears away after stitching is complete. Do NOT fuse it to the Felty. Rather, use it like you’d use Tear-Easy Stabilizer, and then tear it away after stitching is complete. I like Totally Stable for this because it comes in black (and the darker fabric really makes these designs pop). If using a light color of Sulky Felty, pair it with Tear Easy or white Totally Stable. When the embroidery is complete, gently tear away the stabilizer beyond the outer design perimeter.
- Velvet, velveteen or napped fabrics with Sulky Tear-Easy Stabilizer and Sulky Solvy. Hoop only the stabilizer, and then float the fabric over the hoop to avoid hop burn. Use Sulky KK2000XT to secure the fabric to the hooped stabilizer. Then, float a piece of Sulky Solvy over the fabric before embroidery. The Solvy acts as a topper so the thread won’t disappear into the fabric pile. When the embroidery is complete, gently tear away the stabilizer from the fabric wrong side. Then, remove the topper by tearing as much away as possible before dampening a towel with water and blotting it onto the remaining stabilizer to remove.
As mentioned, dark, solid-color fabrics provide a beautiful backdrop for the Build a Christmas Bookshelf design collection. The rich thread colors really pop against black, bringing every detail to life. For an extra touch of luxury, choose a plush fabric like Sulky Felty or velveteen. These soft, textured fabrics add depth and richness, giving your finished project a high-end, designer look and feel.
