Halloween Décor Just Got Easier
with festive labels made in the hoop!
Halloween décor is super fun to sew. With these in-the-hoop labels, you can decorate existing canisters, vases and containers of all sizes for Halloween, and the easily remove them for next year when needed. Embroider a few for the bathroom, and place them onto various sized canisters filled with cotton swabs, toilet paper rolls and floss picks. Stitch some for the kitchen and set up a s’mores party with chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows placed artfully into spooky vases. Create your own food labels for a fun party that spooks the kiddos. The possibilities are endless!
The designs, from the Sulky Halloween Potions collection, are all freestanding patch designs, done entirely in the hoop. However, you can also stitch them directly onto fabric to create other projects. See our “Witch Wine Label” post for instructions for floating cork fabric underneath the hoop to secure the patch with stitches.
SUPPLIES FOR HALLOWEEN DÉCOR PATCHES
- Water-soluble stabilizer (Fabri-Solvyâ„¢ or Super Solvyâ„¢, depending on preference)
- Halloween Potions Machine Embroidery Palette (includes 10 spools of Sulky Rayon Thread & 6 designs in 3 sizes)
- 60 wt. Bobbin Thread
- Organ® size 90/14 Embroidery Needles
- Sulky Twillyâ„¢ – Halloween Potions Pack
- Double-sided mounting tape, glue dots or basting tape
FREESTANDING PATCH HOW-TOS
Download the chosen designs. If stitching multiple patches for your Halloween decor, combine as many as possible in one hooping.
Hoop two layers of Fabri-Solvy or one layer of Super Solvy in the hoop. Super Solvy is a bit thicker than Fabri-Solvy, so only one layer is needed. The stabilizer choice is based on personal preference. Both work well for these patches.
Refer to the color sequence chart for the designs to determine when and where to add the Twilly background fabric. Twilly isn’t completely necessary, but helps the patches stand proud and retains the stitch quality of the designs. Truthfully, Twilly is a lifesaver, especially when stitching the large patch designs that are made up of so much thread. A different fabric can be used, but Twilly has a stable backing prefused onto it, making it even more stable and desirable without any effort.
When the embroidery is complete, remove the stabilizer from the hoop. Cut out each design from the stabilizer.
Rinse the patches under running water to remove the stabilizer, especially along the patch edges.
Then, let each patch dry flat on a towel.
PATCH APPLICATIONS
Place double-sided mounting tape, glue dots or basting tape along the patch wrong sides.
Place the patch onto a vase, canister or container of your choice!
Fill vases with supplies for s’mores for Halloween décor at a fun party.
Fill jars with baking supplies and display on your counter.
Look for smaller jars for accents on shelves and mantles.
To create place cards, tape or glue the patch(es) to folded card stock and place on the table with food and beverages.
Don’t forget to make some for your bathroom, too!
