Install a size 70/10 Universal Needle into the machine. Thread it with 50 wt. Cotton Thread. Use the same thread in the bobbin.

Place one white fabric strip and one orange fabric strip right sides together, aligning one long raw edge. Stitch, using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press the seam toward the darker fabric. Then, stitch the opposite orange raw edge to one long raw edge of the yellow fabric strip. Press the seam toward the darker fabric.

piecing strips for candy corn triangles

Use a diamond or triangle specialty ruler to cut 8 isosceles triangles from the Candy Corn strip set, with a 45° angle at the upper edge. Note – four candy corn triangles will have a white section as the upper edge, while four will have a yellow section as the upper edge.

From the black fabric rectangle, cut ten matching triangles.

Place two rows of nine triangles each on a flat work surface. Arrange the candy corn triangles as desired, either with all white fabric upper edges on one row or alternating white and yellow upper edges for both rows. Place a black triangle between each candy corn, alternating triangle directions.

Install a size 90/14 Top Stitch Needle into the machine. Thread it with Holoshimmer Metallic Thread. Make sure the thread is winding off the spool flat, horizontal and facing the needle. Use a Thread Director, if possible, to ensure the thread doesn’t twist when it comes off the spool during sewing.

Set the machine for a 3.5mm straight stitch. Stitch along the plotted quilting lines.

When the quilting is complete, trim the place mat so all edges are even.
