Serger Buying Guide + Fun Starter Projects

A Serger Buying Guide is a smart tool that helps you determine what to look for when purchasing a serger. For National Serger Month, we’re providing you with a FREE Serger Buying Guide, which you can print and bring to your sewing machine dealer. If you know the features you want to use, the serger applications you want to explore, and the projects you want to sew, you’ll be better equipped to purchase a serger that’s right for you.

SERGER SESSIONS

Once you purchase your serger, using the Serger Buying Guide, you’ll need to know how to use it! We’ve got you covered with two Serger Sessions that you can take online, and access at any time. With tons of videos and written posts guiding your way, you’ll feel much more confident about using your new (or “rediscovered”) machine.
The Serger Sewing Session: Basics & Beyond is perfect for ultimate beginners through intermediate serger sewists. This interactive video course takes you through tips for threading a serger; basic stitches to learn; a few decorative stitch techniques and a full project to practice what you’ve learned. (You’ll also find the Serger Buying Guide within this course with tips for how to use it effectively!)

In this video course, you’ll learn about tension settings, serger maintenance, attachments & feet, how to serge corners & curves and how to “quilt as you go” with a serger. Plus, you’ll make a pretty table runner that showcases the techniques you’ve learned, with a bonus coaster project included.

SERGER STARTER PROJECTS

Of course you’ll need some projects to get your creative juices flowing. A favorite starter serger project is knit pajama pants, leggings and lounge pants. Start small with kid-size pajamas (perhaps to gift for Easter or a birthday!), and then move to adult-sized leggings or lounge pants.
Follow along with part 1 and 2 of this Pajama Pant Sew-Along, and create a pair using a fun spring-print fabric.
When you’re ready to tackle some stretchy leggings to wear all spring and summer long, start here. Learn how to copy a favorite leggings pattern. And then, sew up a pair in no time with the help of a 4-thread overlock stitch. Learn several options for hemming, too! Grab a kit to make a pair out of a summery tie-dye print fabric. Or choose the dark galaxy print that goes with every color of t-shirt.

Our Embroidered Lounge Pants Session with Walking Pants Pattern by Amanda’s Bundles takes you through a roomier lounge pant pattern (with pockets!), without without embroidery embellishment. You’ll learn how to use a serger or sewing machine to construct the pants. Plus, you’ll learn how to embroider on a stretchy knit for the ultimate in personalization. The kit for this Session includes luxurious, buttery knit fabric in a charcoal black color. Plus, you’ll get fun threads for embroidery and/or topstitching details.
