Sulky Thread Effects: Filaine 12 wt. Acrylic Thread
Welcome back to Sulky Thread Effects, our series exploring how the right thread can completely change the look, feel and personality of a project.
In each installment, we put one Sulky thread in the spotlight, take a closer look at what makes it unique, and then showcase those qualities in a project designed to let the thread do something special.
This time, we’re turning our attention to a thread that’s all about texture: Sulky Filaine™ 12 wt. Acrylic Thread.
Filaine has a wonderfully nubby appearance that mimics vintage handwork. Use it straight from the spool and it can create the look of lightweight yarn without the bulk. Or brush the finished stitches to make the fibers bloom into something soft, fuzzy and dimensional. Use Filaine for everything from vintage-style embroidery and pronounced topstitching to big-stitch quilting and brushed embroidery that mimics fur.
For our featured project, we’re keeping those fibers unbrushed and using Filaine to add a nostalgic, yarn-like accent to the Sulky Vintage Vibes Knot Bag. This pattern first debuted with our 2025 “VIntage Vibes” Fall Mega Mystery Box, which included all the fabrics and supplies to make this bag (and more!). THREAD EFFECT: SULKY FILAINE
Filaine is a 12 wt., 100% acrylic thread with high tear and rub resistance. Unlike a lighter 40 wt. embroidery thread, its surface has a soft, nubby texture that gives each stitch much more visual presence.
That’s what makes Filaine such an interesting thread for both machine and hand stitching. It can be used on fabrics including woolens and knits, denim, canvas and cotton, and it’s especially effective for:
- Vintage-style machine embroidery
- Hand embroidery and other handwork
- Decorative machine stitching
- Pronounced topstitching
- Big-stitch quilting
- Creating lightweight, yarn-like effects
- Brushed embroidery
- Faux fur, foliage and other dimensional details
You can think of Filaine as a thread with two personalities. Leave it alone, and you get a soft, substantial stitch with a vintage, almost yarn-like character. Brush it, and you unlock an entirely different effect.
FILAINE EFFECT #1: THE LOOK OF LIGHTWEIGHT YARN
One of the things we love most about Filaine is its ability to suggest the look of yarn while still behaving like a thread. Its heavier 12 wt. size and acrylic fiber give stitching a visual weight that’s quite different from traditional 40 wt. machine embroidery thread. Instead of a smooth, shiny surface, Filaine has a more homespun appearance. That makes it a natural fit for projects inspired by vintage textiles.
Think of antique quilts, hand-me-down embroidered linens, hand-stitched clothing, retro kitchen textiles, crewel-inspired motifs and the wonderfully imperfect texture of things that look like they were made by hand.
That’s exactly the feeling we wanted for the Vintage Vibes Knot Bag.
THE PROJECT: VINTAGE VIBES KNOT BAG
A Japanese-style knot bag already has plenty of personality. One handle slips through the other to create the closure, resulting in a simple bag that’s functional, giftable and fun to make. The Vintage Vibes Knot Bag finishes at approximately 13″ W x 18″ H and can be made with coordinating fabrics for a reversible finish.
But for this Thread Effects version, we’re giving the bag an extra dose of nostalgia with Filaine. The goal is to create stitching that looks almost as though it were worked with a fine yarn.
The combination of a vintage-inspired fabric palette, a simple bag silhouette and visible Filaine stitching creates a project that feels like it might have been discovered in a favorite vintage shop, while still feeling completely wearable today.
WHY FILAINE WORKS FOR THE VINTAGE LOOK
Here’s where thread choice makes all the difference. Filaine changes the character of simple Sashiko, straight and even fill stitches. Its heavier weight makes individual stitches easier to see, while the nubby acrylic texture softens their appearance. On the knot bag, we’re taking advantage of exactly that characteristic.
If hand sewing with Filaine, try treating the thread with a bit of Sewer’s Aid to help it glide through the fabric (and stabilizer, if using).
Thread Effects takeaway: If you want machine stitching to suggest the look of handwork, don’t only consider the stitch pattern. Consider the texture of the thread forming those stitches.
WORKING WITH FILAINE BY MACHINE
Because Filaine is a heavyweight 12 wt. thread, it needs a little more room to travel through the needle than standard embroidery thread.
For machine embroidery, use a 100/16 Topstitch, Jeans or Universal Needle, although some machines may perform better with a 90/14 Titanium Needle. A lightweight bobbin thread, such as Sulky Bobbin Thread or 60 wt. PolyLite™, is recommended in the bobbin.
Machine speed matters, too. Slow the embroidery machine by at least half, and possibly to its slowest setting depending on your machine. Slightly lowering the upper tension may also be helpful.
When using Filaine for machine embroidery, design selection is especially important.
Because this is a 12 wt. thread, don’t simply substitute it for 40 wt. thread in any densely digitized embroidery design. Look for digitized specifically for heavyweight thread, with widely spaced stitching, minimal short stitches and few or no underlay stitches.
Look for designs specifically intended for 12 wt. thread or identified with terms such as “brushed,” “fur” or “thick thread.”
That extra breathing room lets the beautiful texture of Filaine show.
ADDING FILAINE TO THE KNOT BAG
For the Vintage Vibes Knot Bag, keep the Filaine unbrushed. That’s important because we aren’t trying to create fur or fluff here. Instead, we want to preserve the thread’s naturally nubby surface so the stitching resembles lightweight yarn or vintage hand embroidery.
Use Filaine to create decorative accents that complement the fabric rather than overpowering it.
Depending on the look you’re after, Filaine can become a beautiful accent for visible decorative stitching, vintage-inspired motifs or other areas where you want a pronounced stitched line.
Let those stitches show.
The texture is the feature.
FILAINE EFFECT #2: BRUSH IT!
Now here’s where Filaine gets really fun.
The same thread that gives our knot bag its subtle vintage texture can be transformed into something dramatically different with one simple tool:
A brush.
After stitching, Filaine can be brushed with the Sulky Filaine Brush, a stiff wire-bristled brush designed to lift the acrylic fibers. Brush the finished stitches in several directions and the thread begins to bloom, creating a fuzzy, fluffy surface.
Suddenly, flat embroidery becomes dimensional.
And that’s why Filaine is such an exciting thread for machine embroidery.
WHEN SHOULD YOU BRUSH FILAINE?
Look for embroidery designs that are specifically digitized for this technique and labeled with words such as:
- Furry
- Brushed
- Fur
- Thick Thread
Those descriptions are a clue that the design has been created with the spacing and stitch structure needed to accommodate a heavyweight thread and, when appropriate, brushing.
Animal designs are an obvious, and adorable, place to start.
For example, our Peekaboo Pets designs use Filaine for much of the animals’ fur. Once embroidery is complete, the Filaine is brushed so the fibers bloom and create the appearance of faux fur. Leave the same thread unbrushed, and you get a completely different textured finish.
But don’t stop at fur. Filaine can create texture for:
- Animal coats and tails
- Beards and hair
- Fuzzy hats and clothing details
- Flowers
- Grasses and foliage
- Clouds
- Snowy or fluffy accents
- Other dimensional embroidery elements

HOW TO BRUSH FILAINE
Finish the embroidery first and remove the project from the hoop.
Then use the Filaine Brush to gently work over the areas stitched with Filaine. For directional elements such as animal fur, brush downward or in the natural direction of the fur.
You’ll begin to see the fibers extend away from the original stitches.
Keep brushing until you’ve achieved the amount of texture you want. You don’t necessarily need every Filaine project to become extremely fluffy; a small amount of brushing can create subtle dimension, while additional brushing produces a more dramatic effect.
ONE THREAD, TWO VERY DIFFERENT EFFECTS
On the Vintage Vibes Knot Bag, we’re celebrating the thread exactly as it comes off the spool.
Unbrushed Filaine = nubby, yarn-like, vintage texture.
In a specially digitized embroidery design, we can take that very same thread and completely change its appearance.
Brushed Filaine = fluffy, furry, dimensional texture.
No additional embellishment is required. The transformation comes from understanding what the thread can do and choosing how you want to use it.

For the Vintage Vibes Knot Bag, Filaine does more than add another color. It adds character.
Once you start thinking about thread as a design element rather than merely the material that makes the stitches, a whole new range of creative possibilities opens up.
