A Sewing Room Deep Clean

Deep Clean Your Sewing Room

Sewing Room Deep Clean after

A deep clean is always on the agenda at the start of springtime. It’s a great feeling to walk into a room that smells fresh, looks bright and is clear of clutter. However, just the thought of setting aside time to clean and organize can be daunting. Let’s try and make it more manageable by starting with the room we spend the most time in: our sewing room!

DEEP CLEAN & ORGANIZE NOTIONS

Here are five things that might make cleaning and organizing your sewing room a bit less dreadful:

1. Sulky Slimline Containers: Do you have thread spools strewn about your creative space (like me)? Organize them by type and size (and color if you’re feeling “extra”) in a Slimline container. The Universal Slimline fits up to 64 large and small snap-end spools, while the Original Slimline holds 104 Small Sulky Snap-end Spools or other small spools from Gutermann, Mettler or Metrosene.

You can purchase an empty Slimline container or one that’s full of new. shiny spools in a variety of color options!

2. If you can never find your favorite tool or marking pen while sewing, grab a Thimble Craft Container to place next to your machine. The containers come in gold, rose gold, rainbow and pearl white (I have the Rose Gold and absolutely LOVE it! In mine, I keep two marking pens (heat-removable and chalk), my trusty 1” x 6” clear ruler, a Sulky Multipurpose Turning Tool, Curved Tip Squeezers, small rotary cutter and lighted seam ripper – and there’s room for more!)

3. I also like to have a mini organizer next to my pressing board. I inevitably need a seam ripper, small scissors for trimming thread ends and mini lint roller when using my iron. This one is small enough to fit on my ironing board without toppling over during pressing. (Plus, it’s super cute on my desk for storing colored pencils in the cutest, most decorative way possible!)

DEEP CLEAN FAVORITE TOOLS

4. Along with cleaning and servicing your sewing machine every year, take time to clean and polish your iron so it stays in tip-top shape. My favorite iron cleaner is by Faultless. It’s super easy to use – squeeze a small amount on a cloth and iron over it. That’s it! The gunk, residue and water spots are gone in a flash.

PLANS FOR PROJECTS

5. Jot down your WIPs, UFOs and future sewing plans in a spiral notebook. This way nothing gets lost in the shuffle and you can finish up long-overdue projects to make room for new ones! As you take note, assign each project to a person or special occasion. When a birthday or holiday rolls around, you’ll already have a great gift idea in the works. I love a gridded notebook so I can also sketch new ideas as the mood strikes.

DEEP CLEAN MOTIVATION

Start off a day (or week?!) of cleaning with some fun organizational products. They’ll help turn a challenging task into a much more enjoyable activity. Then, once you have your tools and notions sorted you can move to sorting through fabrics and making three piles: donate, remnant and future awesomeness!
