PATTERN TIPS
Grab the free Draft Stopper pattern, which comes with the snowflake templates, and begin creating this project today! This project works great for any door that measures 32” wide. Adjust the pattern dimensions for larger or smaller doors.
Velvet fabric gives this project a designer look. However, other home-dec fabrics also work nicely with this pattern. Try wide-wale corduroy for a cozy vibe; canvas for durability; interfaced quilting cotton for fun colors and patterns.
In lieu of snowflakes, try heart-shaped appliqués, shamrocks or simple circles in different sizes. Or forgo the appliqué altogether and add machine embroidery or decorative stitching to the fabric before construction.
The featured snowflake appliqués are added by hand stitching. But this is easily done using machine appliqué as well. Try a blanket stitch, straight stitch or decorative stitch of your choice to secure the snowflakes. They’re made out of Sulky Felty, so no raw edges will fray!
If you’ve never made piping or welting before, it adds another high-end touch that takes this project from “homemade” to “designer.” The pattern breaks down the steps so you can easily tackle this added embellishment and apply what you learn to more home-dec projects in the future. You can also purchase premade welting in a coordinating fabric and color, too!
Fill the draft stopper with a combination of popcorn and fiberfill to weight it and plump to your liking.
