Sailing Quilt for Sulky

Create a pieced Sailing Quilt table runner featuring fun fabrics for summer. Choose patriotic-themed fabrics for a nice addition to your July 4 décor. Or choose hues of blue, gray and white for a nautical theme.

This pattern was designed and made by Susan Marth, of SuznQuilts.com. Susan is an accomplished quilter, patternmaker and loves using Sulky Cotton Threads in her creations. Her Tiny Tree Template Set is recommended for this project, to create the sails on the sailboat blocks. The acrylic templates allow for accurate cutting. Plus, you can use them to create all sorts of trees and tree-shaped designs for future makes!

PATTERN DETAILS

The following supplies are enough to make a Sailing Quilt table runner, measuring 8″ x 18″. If desired, create more blocks to assemble a larger throw or quilt. Or make just one block and use it for a mug rug or coaster.

Use a Perfect Piecing Seam Guide for the perfect seam. Spray & iron all fabrics with spray starch, such as Mary Ellen’s Best Press before cutting.

QUILT PATTERN TIPS

When constructing the blocks, use Sulky 50 wt. Thread for best results, This thread is high-quality, long-staple thread that’s lightweight and strong. There is no telltale “bump” on the fabric right side when piecing with this thread, as it almost sinks into the fabric fibers for an inconspicuous seam. (The sailboat portions may look like appliqué, but they are all actually pieced!)

For quilting, use a combination of Sulky 30 wt. and 12 wt. Threads for different results. The 30 wt. Thread is nice for the background, as it pops off the fabric surface to provide a nice texture. Lengthen the stitch to 3.5mm or even 4.0mm for longer, hand-look stitching. The 12 wt. Cotton Thread is much thicker and works nicely to create the satin stitched masts and sail outlines. When using thicker threads, be sure to change the needle size, too. Use a size 90/14 with the 30 wt. Thread. And, use a size 100/16 for 12 wt. Thread. Use the 50 wt. Cotton in the bobbin, per the construction thread.
