Make a St. Patrick’s Day Coaster or Mug Rug for your Shamrock Shake or Green Tea and cozy up to some wool felt applique!
I have a soft spot for the minor holidays like Valentine’s Day, Arbor Day, Pi Day and of course, St. Patrick’s Day. Maybe it’s because it’s March and I love green and the promise of spring. Maybe because I could eat corned beef and sauerkraut every day. Or maybe it’s just a great excuse to have a party and stitch something new.
My other addiction is coffee. So I decided to design a St. Patrick’s Day coaster or Mug Rug that celebrated both. Instead of just giving you the pattern, I thought I would go through my design process a bit. I start with a drawing.
With a design as simple as this, my next step took me to Google Docs, which is free for anyone who has a gmail account. I found a font that I liked and a 4-leaf clover. I put them together in the document and printed it onto Sulky® Stick n Stitch™.
I cut the phrase out and the clover. I stuck the phrase onto a piece of black wool felt.
Then I stuck the clover to a piece a green wool felt and cut out the individual sections.
I stitched the words with Sulky 12 Wt. Cotton Petites and a simple backstitch.
I used Sulky KK2000™ Temporary Spray Adhesive to hold the pieces of the clover down and the stem for the St. Patrick’s Day coaster.
I couched the stem down with a cross stitch. I used a blanket stitch on the clover petals and the stem stitch for veins of the petals. When my stitching was complete, I rinsed the Sulky Stick ‘n Stitch out with room temperature water and let my piece air dry.
In the end, I have a wonderful little St. Patrick’s Day Coaster/Mug Rug to celebrate this upcoming holiday!
