Travel More this Year & Take a Sewing Vacation

    January 1, 2019 /

Take a Sewing Vacation & Travel More This Year New Year’s resolution: sewing vacation! To avoid a resolution that’s unattainable, I like to keep it simple and vow to simply sew more, have more fun, spend more time with the kids…things like this. This year my New Year’s resolution is to take a sewing vacation. I’m vowing to feed my passions by traveling more and absorbing inspiration from other cultures, other cities, and other people. I know it’s a lot easier to do this sort of thing if you don’t have to work most days, as it can be hard to get days off work. I’m assuming though that a…

  • Why Blendables are the Bomb for Quilting

    September 13, 2018 /

“You will love the intriguing results you get with Sulky 30 Wt. Cotton Blendables Thread.” I remember being in a quilting class when I heard this statement. Honestly, my interest was peaked because of the word ‘intriguing’. I would never have described my quilting that way, but gosh, I sure wanted my quilting to be intriguing! So, I got some Sulky 30 Wt. Cotton Blendables Thread and tried them out. Before I tell you my thoughts on them, let me tell you a bit about the thread itself. Blendables are different from other variegated threads for several reasons: They are a masterful blend of different colors within the same range of tone and intensity…

  • “Raven Captures the Sun” Art Quilt

    July 19, 2018 /

“Raven Captures the Sun” Art Quilt by Chris Eichner Did you know that according to an ancient legend, the solar eclipse occurs when a Raven “captures” the sun? This legend became the inspiration for Chris Eichner – Fiber Artist, Designer, and Sulky Certified Teacher – and her award-winning art quilt “The Raven Captures the Sun”. “The quilt originated from a challenge to ‘Thread Heads’, which is a group of fiber artists that I’m a member of in Seneca, South Carolina. We were asked by Duke Energy Nuclear Power Plant to create art quilts for display for the month of August, which would represent the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.” says…

    How to Autograph Your Quilt

    January 23, 2018 /

By: Eric Drexler, Master of Free-Motion Did you know that today is National Handwriting Day?  I don’t know about y’all, but I am personally NOT a fan of my handwriting (yikes!).  But you know what, we should be proud of those messy, crooked letters! 🙂  On the blog today, we have Eric Drexler, Sulky Educator and Master of Free-Motion, talking about how he incorporates his own handwriting in his quilts! Here’s what he has to say… The first time I even thought about “signing” my quilt was at one of my first guild lectures.  When the ultra-fun trunk show of beautiful Sulky® quilts, and some of my own, was over,…

    March 20, 2017 /

Trends From Quiltcon 2017 Quiltcon is a quilt show like no other as it focuses specifically on the world of Modern Quilting! The quilt above won Best In Show. It is titled bling by Katherine Jones from Tasmania, Australia. The quilt was paper pieced from solid fabrics; the inspiration for this quilt was a princess cut diamond. I got a chance to chat with Katherine at the show. She is a lovely woman with a passion for all things quilty. Modern quilters use quite a lot of thread! Look at the beautiful machine and hand stitching in the quilt, Madonna by Brittany Bowen Burton, that won for Best Machine Quilting.…

Let me know in the comments and Happy Pi Day! It’s as easy as Pi(e)! Strip-Pieced Mariner’s Compasses by Robin Ruth Design What started as a quest to make a…
