A needle is my tool, thread is my medium and stitches are my marks. My artwork is decorative and detailed, full of patterns and found objects, all bound together with stitching. I create sculptural scenes in bas-relief, much like miniature, shallow stage sets, with figures imposed on embellished fabric backgrounds. There is a certain over-the-top quality to my work that…

  • Pillowcases for Pets in Need to Make & Give

    May 21, 2019 /

Pillowcases for Pets: Calling all Animal Lovers! It’s National Pet Month, so we’re taking a slight departure from our Pillowcases for PEOPLE in Need charity sewing initiative to bring you Pillowcases for PETS in Need! Use an existing pillowcase or create your own using our free pattern. Stuff it with batting or shredded memory foam, and then whipstitch the cuff closed. Or simply insert a standard pillow into the pillowcase (if your pet is well behaved and won’t tear it apart!). It’s easy to add appliques to the pillowcase body or add machine embroidery to the pillowcase cuff–a cute doggie or kitty design, fire hydrant or fish adds a little…

  • Machine Embroidery Series – Flannel

    November 17, 2016 /

This series is written by guest blogger, Pamela Cox. Pamela is an expert embroiderer, designer, digitizer and all around wonderful girl! We are so happy to have her contributing to the Sulky Blog!       Flannel is one of the easiest fabrics to machine embroider on.  Although it is found in a variety of weights and fiber content – cotton, wool even synthetics – the common characteristic is that it retains a soft feel allowing it to be used for blankets, bed sheeting, nightwear and baby items. Although flannel is considered a “nap-fabric” and needs to be treated as such when cutting out a garment, the “nap-rules” do not…

  • 7 Reasons to Sew Every Day

    June 23, 2015 /

Sewing is my favorite hobby. I really would rather sew than just about anything, but life, kids, the house, the hubby , the job…it all seems to drown out that precious time to sew. One the my favorite bits of advice that I received when I asked you to send in advice to new sewists (see that post here) was to sew for at least 20 minutes per day! I love that and have tried to put that great advice into practice ever since then. It has been an amazing change for me in my life! Today I want to motivate you to do the same thing by giving you…

  • Tips for Machine Embroidery on Onesies

    May 5, 2015 /

I have been all about baby lately! I have several friends that are having babies soon so I am making lots of baby things. I made a sweet blanket for one and Taggies for a set a twins. (Go here to check out the blanket and here for the Taggie tutorial). Next up, the onesies! I love seeing a brand new baby in a cute little onesie with a name or little embroidered applique on it, but let’s be honest, onesies are tiny and can be hard to embroider! Here are a few tips to make things a little easier. Hoop Size. Use a hoop that is about the same…

  • Machine Embroidery on Things that are Fluffy

    April 29, 2015 /

In my life, spring always seems to be baby season. In the next few weeks, I have 3 sweet babies that are getting gifts! The first one is a girl that will be the third child of one of the pastors at my church. Since I did very simple panel quilts for the little boys, I thought a fluffy pink blanket with the name on it would be good for the little girl. I picked this very fluffy fabric. I love how this fabric feels, that is is the same on both sides and all I need to do is embroider on the name, bind it and I am done. Fast…
