  • August Birthstone Sew Along: Peridot Piecing & Sewing Curves

    August 15, 2019 /

The August Birthstone Sew Along might be my favorite installment so far! This Peridot block by MJ Kinman is not only pretty, but it also is a great lesson in sewing curves. There were many, so I was able to experiment with a few different techniques to see which one was best for this project. To join in on the August Birthstone Sew Along, you can purchase the fabric bundle, the pattern, the thread palette, or the bundle that includes all of the aforementioned items. Let’s get started. CUTTING–LOTS OF CUTTING First off, a rotary cutting system is a MUST for the August Birthstone block. You will not get the…

    Machine Embroidered Teacher Journal Cover

    August 8, 2019 /

Machine Embroidered Teacher Journal by Ellen Osten Surely you know a teacher starting school again (or for the first time) this fall who needs a machine embroidered teacher journal cover. Whether your kiddos or grandkids are starting school with a new teacher or your friends or neighbors are teachers themselves, this machine embroidered journal cover is a must-make! It’s perfect for school teachers, music teachers or just about any kind of teacher. Traditionally, teachers were gifted a nice shiny apple on the first day of school. This practice began in the 1700s, when teachers were actually paid by families in apples (or potatoes) for their work. Now the apple is…

DIY School Supplies: 5 Projects to Make for Students

    July 25, 2019 /

Back to School supplies are hitting the shelves already, which means it’s time to delve into our fabric stashes and make some DIY school supplies rather than buying the standard stuff at the store. I love a pencil case as much as anyone. They’re so useful and can house so many things (not just pencils, of course). However, in my kids’ school, the pencil case from the mandatory supply list must be a hard-sided container. So, I thought I’d bring you some other types of DIY school supplies you can make, and even get the kids involved, too. 1. Personalized Lunch Bag You can make your own insulated lunch bag…

July Birthstone Block Sew Along: the Ruby

    July 20, 2019 /

Are you ready for the July Birthstone Block Sew Along? If you haven’t picked up the kit, there’s still time to receive it and make it before the month’s up. And if you just need the pattern, grab one today!   PATTERN DETAILS The July Birthstone Block is super pretty. I love all the red, pink, and purple hues. There are a TON of pieces to this pattern, so I highly suggest you follow MJ Kinman’s advice to gather some envelopes to organize the pieces for each fabric color. I did NOT do this and, sure enough, I had to re-cut one piece because I couldn’t find it after cutting…
