Pumpkin Carving Tools for Success (even with kids!)

    October 9, 2019 /

Pumpkin Carving Tools for Success Pumpkin carving tools are made for a reason – carving a pumpkin is hard work! From scraping out all the guts to carving the actual jack-o-lantern, it’s exhausting work–especially if you’re carving more than one or creating an elaborate scene. Now, the pumpkins shown above were carved by my three small children. So there were no elaborate scenes going on here. However, I will say that they did them all by themselves! Even my five-year-olds drew the faces and carved their pumpkins without help. Sulky Stick ‘n Carve made it so that they didn’t have to draw directly onto their pumpkins. If they made a…

Paper Pieced Pumpkin Table Runner by Vicki Holloway Create a paper pieced pumpkin table runner to display before Halloween and beyond! This table runner will take your decor into Thanksgiving with its pumpkin blocks and beautiful quilting. For this paper pieced pumpkin table runner, we’re repurposing the Apple Mug Rug pattern previously published and using different colored fabrics to turn the apple into a pumpkin. Don’t you just LOVE a dual-duty pattern? Me too! This one DOES have a slight variation with the pumpkin stem, so download the pumpkin here. Hibernating Hedgehog Cutlery Holder + New Thread Palette

    October 3, 2019 /

Hibernating Hedgehog In-The-Hoop Project A Hibernating Hedgehog Cutlery Holder is just what you need for your fall tablescape! This in-the-hoop design is free with the purchase of our brand-new fall thread palette, designed by Sweet Pea. It’s designed for a 5×7 hoop. To make this project, you’ll also need either Sulky Ultra Solvy (my preference) or Tear-Easy stabilizer. You also need some batting and a few fabrics in the colors shown above (batiks work great!) for the cutlery holder front, back, lining and appliqué pieces. Fabric A –18cm x 23cm (7” x 9”) front of holder Fabric B –18cm x 23cm(7” x 9”)front lining Fabric C –18cm x 8cm (7”…

  • Halloween Decor: Fun Threads to Use to Spook & Delight

    October 1, 2019 /

Happy Halloween…Decor, that is! Halloween decor is so much fun to make and display. All bets are off when it comes to embellishments, too. The more the better! Add some fun effects to your Halloween decor with thread that glows, reflects, sparkles and pops! The pillow above features several different thread types, and YES it glows, too! Let it Glow Sulky Glowy thread is my first choice for Halloween decor projects. There’s no better time to create glow-in-the-dark wall hangings, table runners, quilts and the like. Some embroidery designs are even digitized specifically for glow-in-the-dark thread, such as the Halloween Glow – Jack o’ Lantern by Urban Threads pictured below.…

    September 24, 2019 /

Winter Mini Quilt made easy with Simply Applique Join us in a new FREE webinar, October 8, 2019 at 2pm to learn how to make a winter mini quilt using pre-fused, laser-cut applique pieces. What is Simply Applique? Simply Applique is a program Sulky began with Shabby Fabrics. Together, we curated four kits to represent the four seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall. Sulky chose rayon threads to coordinate with the fabrics chosen for each mini quilt, including a few metallic spools in the mix. Each kit comes with laser-cut applique pieces that are already treated with Soft Fuse, a fusible web that is super easy to use. Soft Fuse…

Embroidery on Kraft-tex + Laptop Case Pattern

    September 14, 2019 /

Kraft-tex Laptop Case by Ellen March Learn how to embroider a Kraft-tex laptop case for a great gift idea. If you’re looking for gifts to make for teachers, friends, dads or teens, look no further than this laptop case. It’s easily customized using different embroidery designs and fabrics. Plus the Kraft-tex mimics the look of leather and has a unique texture that lends something special to an otherwise basic project. Kraft-tex is an interesting material that comes in different colors, either washed or unwashed. It looks like leather but sews, acts and washes like fabric. It has a stiff hand but also is pliable and resilient, easily manipulated to insert…

    September 13, 2019 /

Halloween costumes to sew don’t have to break the bank and don’t have to keep you up all night sewing before the big day. Here are some great Halloween costume ideas, whether you want your costume (or your kid’s costume) to be subtle or elaborate this year. Halloween Apron Sew an apron (pinafore, really) with festive Halloween embroideries. These are Halloween costumes you can quickly throw over clothes at work right before the lunch potluck begins. Or don it while handing out candy on Halloween night. Dress it up with a fascinator and some makeup to complete the look with a bit more effort. Use reflective CRY thread for some of…

Freestanding Lace Flower Fascinator with Filaine Thread by Anna He, Seattle Cosplay Create a flower fascinator using freestanding lace designs and Filaine thread by Sulky. This project is a great starting point for a quick Halloween costume (wear all green and call yourself a bouquet!) and also is a fun addition to your every-day wardrobe. from Anna: I have a fall/winter costume on my bucket list and to go along with it is a pretty pastel colored fascinator. The Filaine thread is an excellent choice for a handmade look while using my embroidery machine to stitch out freestanding lace (FSL). When I first got the thread, I was impressed by…
