• Sandpaper Seashell Coasters

Yesterday, I did a tutorial on Sandpaper Crayon Art and I ended up with these lovely seashells. I decided they would be perfect coasters and a great way to practice my free-motion quilting skills! I took the fabric and layered it with batting and backing, securing everything together with Sulky KK 2000™ Temporary Spray Adhesive. I also picked some thread colors. I used Sulky 30 wt. Cotton Blendables in Hyacinth #4079 for the shells and Foliage #4009 for the quilting. I used a Sulky prewound bobbin the the bobbin. Set up your machine for free-motion. For my machine, I lower the feed dogs, put on the free-motion foot and use a…

  • Sandpaper Crayon Art Tutorial

Sandpaper Crayon Art Sandpaper Crayon Art is a unique technique for embellishing, and even the kiddos can get in on the action. I am still in a ‘beachy’ mood so I thought it would be fun to try doing the Sandpaper Seashells from the free pattern that we have on the website. I realized as I was doing it, the step-by-step instructions for actually doing the Sandpaper Crayon Art is no longer available on the site. This kind of thing happens when redesigning a website but we were all surprised that none of use has noticed this sooner. So we decided this was the perfect opportunity to update that tutorial for you here.…

  • Inspiration from Vacation for Future Keepsake Projects

Taking Inspiration from Vacation Taking inspiration from vacation is a great way to remember your travels long after vacation ends and school starts. Whether it’s motifs you see that remind you of a special place, or great architecture from a church or building, or perhaps a food you can reimagine in fabric and thread. My family ended the summer in style. We took a wonderful trip to St. Simon’s Island off the coast of Georgia. I got a lot of project inspiration from vacation to fuel my fall by looking through my favorite photos.   We hung out at the beach. The colors of sand and sky will make their…

  • Christmas in July – Christmas Ornaments

Well Friends, this is the last post in the Christmas in July series. I have truly enjoyed thinking about Christmas in the middle of summer! It’s nice to not have the rush of the season over my head while I create fun new things to decorate my home this season. My tree will look great with it’s new Speedy Spiral Christmas Tree Skirt, my table will look festive with my new Table Runner and my mantel will be fun and cheerful with my Banner Flags. Not to mention my new Spool of Thread Stockings!   The only way to end this series is with Christmas Ornaments! I put up several…

Christmas in July – Mug Hug tutorial

COFFEE SLEEVE MUG HUG PATTERN Earlier in the month, I made this Mug Rug using the scraps leftover from making the Speedy Spiral Christmas Tree Skirt. One of my wonderful readers asked if I would do a tutorial for a Mug Hug pattern as well. Without further ado, here it is! TO satisfy all coffee (and hot beverage) drinkers, I did 2 Mug Hug pattern sizes. The first is the kind you use on a tapered cup, like the kind you get when you go to Starbucks. Why use that silly cardboard sleeve when you could use one of these! These are pretty easy, first download the mug hug pattern…

  • Christmas in July – Spool of Thread Stocking

As I was preparing for this series, I knew I wanted to do some kind of fun stocking. I love hanging the stockings on the mantel every year. I love opening my stocking on Christmas morning! In my house, everyone gets a stocking, even the dog. But during my search for inspiration (and I was spending way too much time on Pinterest), I began to wonder, why are almost all the Christmas stockings shaped like…stockings? I found tons of creative ones: R2D2, Minions, funny boots, even snowmen, but they were all shaped like a stocking. So I made a decision: Stockings in my house will no longer be shaped like…

  • Creating Round Robin Wearable Art

Suzy Seed, Nancy Sapin & Lee Fletcher, all National Educator’s representing Sulky of America, have been working the Sulky booth at the Houston International Quilt Festival for the past 7 years.  After the first year, they decided it would be fun to stretch their creativity and sewing knowledge, work outside of their comfort zone, and begin an adventure creating wearable art the round-robin way.  What is a round robin?  It’s when something gets passed from person to person, each person creating one part of a whole.  Can you imagine the surprise when the garment owner receives all the finished pieces not knowing until the end what the other’s created. Each…

  • Christmas in July Series – Mantel Scarf

It may be extremely hot and humid outside, but I am dreaming of a white Christmas in my sewing studio! Okay, maybe not white, but bright red, green, pink, orange and blue! I am in love with the new color scheme that I am using for my holiday season decor this year. It started with the Speedy Spiral Christmas Tree Skirt, then the Bonus Projects that I made from the scraps. Now I have dug into Cotton + Steel’s new Christmas line Tinsel. I have always used a very traditional Garnet and Gold color scheme during the holidays (yes, it is because I went to FSU). This year I am…
